Wellingborough Post Office worker’s 40-year award

A Post Office worker has been recognised for providing a first class service for 40 years.

Peter Jakeways took over the Northampton Road Post Office in Wellingborough from his mother four decades ago.

While other branches in the town have closed, Mr Jakeways has taken it from just one counter to six and was presented with a long service award on Monday.

He said: “We have Tesco one side of us, and Sainsbury’s the other. We must be doing something right because we’re still standing.”

But he added: “You have to keep updating and improving your branch. You can’t rest on your laurels or you’ll come unstuck. That’s why we’re putting in an extension and having a refurbishment.”

This will double the size of the shop, which is staffed by Mr Jakeways and a team of five workers and is open 365 days a year, including Christmas Day.

Mr Jakeways said: “Without the dedication of all my staff down the years, none of this could have been achieved.

“I enjoy being at the heart of the local community, even if that means working when you’d rather be relaxing.

“It was a shock when I found out I’d be receiving the long-service award.

“To have my hard work recognised is a nice feeling.”

Mr Jakeways’ field support advisor for the Post Office, Graham Simmons, who presented the award, said: “Peter embodies the kind of attitude and dedication that the Post Office is so proud of.

“We want to congratulate Peter on his outstanding service to Northampton Road Post Office and the local community over the last 40 years.

“It’s an extraordinary achievement.”
