Still no official opening date for Nuneaton's sorting office

ROYAL mail bosses have apologised for the continued closure of Nuneaton's main sorting office.

They have told the News that they still cannot confirm when the Church Street-based office will re-open.

It has been almost two months since the local facility was closed due to a suspected asbestos outbreak.

This caused chaos in the run up to the festive period, as there was mail 'trapped' inside the office for almost two weeks, and householders who missed parcel deliveries had to go to Coventry to collect their post.

Missed deliveries still have to be collected from the temporary sorting office in Ibstock Road in Coventry, if they cannot be redirected, which poses a problem for people without their own means of transport.

But the News thought there was a glimmer of hope when workmen were spotted at the currently closed site, with temporary work cabins set up outside.

This sparked rumours that the office was due to re-open soon but a spokesperson for Royal Mail said that they cannot provide an exact timescale of when staff will move back in and it will be re-opened to the public.

"It is likely to be a number of weeks before the Nuneaton office re-opens," the spokesperson said.

"We apologise to our customers for the continued inconvenience."

As featured in the News just before Christmas, Nuneaton and Bedworth's Mayor, councillor Bob Copland, paid tribute to local postmen and women for the way they coped with the unexpected move to the temporary office in Coventry, and how they worked round the clock to ensure as much mail as possible was delivered during the initial mayhem.
