Royal Mail has been thrust into another dispute over top pay – just as it emerged that the activist hedge fund that was its largest private shareholder has landed a windfall from selling shares.

TCI, run by Chris Hohn, became the first investors to hold more than 5 per cent of the postal shares.

But now the fund has sold 4.5m shares worth more than £27m, retaining a 4.58 per cent holding.

Although it is not known what the fund paid for its holding in the first place, shares were floated at 330p in October and have soared ever since, yesterday closing at 600p.

It came as the postal service was thrust into a fresh pay row after chairman Donald Brydon said it was ‘only fair’ to hike the pay of chief executive Moya Greene.

But the move will stoke controversy. Greene has already been at the centre of two pay disputes, first after receiving an unauthorised £250,000 to help her buy a house, then again after raiding her pension pot despite money she withdrew being earmarked for when she left the company.

Would it not be 'only fair' to hike the pay of posties too?

You know, without expecting us to flog ourselves into an early grave for the 'privilege' of a half decent pay increase.
So they can line their pockets with bonus payments and the like.
