Investigators put a “test” gift card from Marks & Spencer in mail which was later found in defendants van
A postman who helped himself to birthday and gift cards out of mail bags was jailed.
Michael Gerard Kelly, of Newport Close, Prenton hoarded away more than 6,000 letters, cards and business mail with the intention of checking them at a later date for cash.
His actions were uncovered when store Next complained a gift card had not been delivered and he was seen on CCTV trying to use a stolen card.
Investigators put a “test” gift card from Marks & Spencer in the mail which was later found in his works van, along with seven brightly coloured greetings cards he claimed had been incorrectly sorted.
Mail was also found at a property he said he was living at.
District judge Miriam Shelvey told Liverpool magistrates' court Kelly, 34, had abused the trust the public had in the Royal Mail and his actions had led to the finger of suspicion being pointed at his innocent colleagues.
Ms Shelvey said: “The court reports six offences. They are very serious offences.”
She added: “You preyed on other people. You have stolen as somebody waits for something to arrive from someone who cares for them. In this case it was an investigation that brought your wrongdoing to light.”
Kelly had been employed as a postman for five years and worked in the north Liverpool delivery office before he was charged.
Quentin Neal, defending, said Kelly had been through a difficult break-up and had no previous dishonesty offences, though he had been before the courts for an unrelated matter and received a community order.
The judge gave Kelly five months for theft of five postal packets between July 2012 to August 2013; five months to run concurrently for delaying 6,011 postal packets between September 2012 and August 2013 and five months to run concurrently for delaying 26 postal packets between September 2012 and August 2013.
She said he would also serve five months for the other three offences.
After the case, Royal Mail spokeswoman Val Bodden said: “Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women, who are honest and hardworking and who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely.”

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.
