Lazy Newcastle postie hoarded 23,000 pieces of mail at his home

A lazy postman was found hoarding more than 23,000 items of mail he had been paid to deliver.

For five years David Goddard pretended to have delivered thousands of promotional brochures and leaflets, including some for the Labour Party.

In fact, the material was stacked up in huge trolleys at his home, a court heard.

Now the postie, who also stole undelivered digital television box filters, has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Newcastle Crown Court heard Goddard had been paid £400 on top of his salary to deliver the leaflets, which themselves were not of value to him.

Sentencing him, Judge John Milford QC said: “There was no value in it for him in having the items, he just couldn’t be bothered to deliver them.

“He has been storing them in his house for five years.”

The court heard organisations pay Royal Mail to have the promotional material delivered and posties get an extra allowance for doing so.

But, between March 2008 and July this year, Goddard let the leaflets stack up at his home in Blucher, Newcastle.

Vince Ward, prosecuting, said: “Some 23,290 items were found in his house, in three trolleys which are six foot high.

“He had claimed the extra allowance for delivering them, he claimed about £400 for delivering them, having not delivered them.”

The court heard Goddard had worked for Royal Mail for 15 years and had a round in Lemington, Newcastle.

He pleaded guilty to interfering with mail and also theft of some undelivered filters for digital set top boxes. The 49-year-old, of Coquet Buildings, Blucher, Newcastle, was given a 12-week prison sentence, suspended for two years and must do 200 hours of unpaid work.

Judge Milford told him: “This is a case where there has been a breach of a high degree of trust because you were a postman.

“The amount of material you did not deliver is very considerable. However, because of your previous good character and your early guilty plea, I have decided the sentence can be suspended.”

Jamie Adams, defending, said: “He is ashamed to have put himself in this position.

“He regards it seriously even though there was no profit to him.

“He is now out of work and on benefits.”

I get the payments for labour party leaflets but if the rest is d2d we aren't getting any 'allowance' for them.

That's at least 2 years when he was still getting D2D payments.
It would have been a laugh hearing his defence trying to explain the ins and outs of the Delivery Supplement though.
Honestly m'lud I know it's called a delivery supplement and it was part-funded by the old D2D payments but it's got nothing to do with delivering D2D....
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Poor control, ineffectual management, the list is probably endless, but in most cases its because they can, and they don't think there will be any consequences.

Either he lived on his walk or I'm guessing he used a private car on delivery.
This is probably how he would have taken them home.

Once and for all, stop paying lip-service to it and ban bloody private cars for good!
Theft facilitators, that's all they are. :evil/mad

Rant over, normal service will now be resumed. :Very Happy

Yes, countless problems like this from private cars on delivery  but none I'm aware of from taking vans home :nana .
