VIDEO: Cows stop pensioners post

A right Royal Mail rumpus has broken out after posties stopped delivering to an elderly couple – because of cows.
Sheila and Jeff White have lived in their 19th century cottage in Carnforth for 33 years and never had a problem with their post.
But the Royal Mail has now refused to deliver whenever a herd of cows is in a nearby field.
A letter to the couple claims the cows are a hazard.
Sheila, 77, said: “It’s health and safety gone mad.
“My view is that if you don’t like cows, you shouldn’t be a postman in the first place.”
The postie usually drives up a lane in a field to the Whites’ canalside home, passing through a gate on the way.
But the Royal Mail will no longer deliver if the gate is closed, saying there is no room to turn their van around and cows get in the way.
Jeff, 80, and Sheila have now been told to either put a letter box closer to the main road or collect their mail from the delivery office in Carnforth. They have three months to appeal.
“We’ve both got hip trouble and to ask us to pick up our mail is not on,” said Sheila.
“I don’t understand why the postman can’t park on the nearby housing estate and walk up. It’s not far.
“The cows aren’t dangerous. There are people walking their dogs there all the time.
“There’s also a pedestrian towpath by the side of the canal, nowhere near the cows.”
Val Bodden, spokesman for Royal Mail, said: “We can confirm that we have spoken to the owners to explain that due to health and safety concerns regarding delivery to their address alongside an uneven canal side path and through a field, we have suspended deliveries unless we consider it safe to do so.
“We will also be contacting the owners again to investigate the possibility of an alternative route to reach their property.
“We deliver to almost 29 million addresses so it is always a last resort if we decide not to deliver to a specific address and we will not compromise on the health and safety of our postmen and women.”
Is it safe to deliver post to Mr and Mrs White? Our chief reporter Greg Lambert went to find out.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Doesn't RMC have a resident dairy expert?

Cows are fine but what about a moose?
(Just curious.)

Moose is a postmodern object system for Perl 5 that takes the tedium out of writing object-oriented Perl. It borrows all the best features from Perl 6, CLOS (Lisp), Smalltalk, Java, BETA, OCaml, Ruby and more, while still keeping true to its Perl 5 roots.Straight4ward wrote:

And I don't understand a single word of that.
But what about a water buffalo?

"And I don't understand a single word of that." Me too.
Water buffalo are wonderfully placid creatures. I once saw a little lad of probably no more than 4 or 5 years old directing one along a road with nothing more than a thin cane of bamboo. (Blimey, I've gone all wistful.

I didn't grow up on a farm but I have friends who did. Cow can get really bolshie, particularly if you wander into "their" pasture.
(Cows also sleep standing up. This has led to the practice of cow-tipping out in the American Midwest. So, you and your delinquent friends creep into a pasture, most of a six-pack already drunk, go up to a sleeping cow... and push him over! Then you run like heck for the fence before the rest of the enraged herd catches up to you.
You can only do it once or twice a night but for some kids, it was the highlight of their youth.)

1. Cows don't sleep standing up.britwrit wrote:(Cows also sleep standing up. This has led to the practice of cow-tipping out in the American Midwest. 2. Cows are naturally wary animals, they have a herd mentality and some of the herd will always be on guard duty, first sign of a drunken bum and they will bolt.
3. It takes at least 6 people to get a cow on its back,I've seen half a dozen big scary farmers take a kicking trying it.
4. There are videos of everything on youtube, there is no genuine footage of "cow tipping".
5 .It's an urban myth...or bollocks if you like.

I've been absolutely wrong about things before and I'm sure I'm absolutely dead wrong about this too. But...
I lived in Missouri for five years. During that time, I heard stories from friends about cow-tipping during their high school days and complaints from farmers/cops about kids screwing around with cows. If not an urban myth, I think it counts as a collective mass delusion.

Maybe cows are less intelligent in the US.britwrit wrote:I think it counts as a collective mass delusion.
It is possible to tip a cow over,It's just hard work and you'll probably injure yourself and the cow but you certainly won't do it while the cow is sleeping because they lie down to sleep.
Horses can sleep standing up but you won't get within 50 feet of a sleeping horse before it hears you.
The idea that you when you're drunk you could sneak up to anything is ridiculous.
I can't even sneak into my own house without waking everybody up.

Yeah. Now that I've actually bothered to, you know, think about it, it's obviously a silly myth.
Still. It would be a ridiculously cruel practice if it actually existed and weirdly, all of those imaginary farmers can rest easy knowing that their imaginary cows aren't going to be tipped over this weekend.
