THE TEMPORARY closure of Nuneaton’s Royal Mail sorting office has caused outrage among residents.

As reported in the Nuneaton News Christmas parcel collections have been thrown into chaos after an accident at the Church Street-based facility exposed asbestos.

This means that people cannot collect any parcels in Nuneaton and instead have to go to the former Parcelforce at Unit C4 on Three Spires Industrial Estate, Ibstock Road in Coventry.

Royal Mail bosses have apologised to residents for any inconvenice caused.

But this did not stop people from expressing their outrage on The News’ Facebook page with many expressing what an inconvenience it has caused them.
While others posed the question about what are those who cannot drive supposed to do.

Borough and county councillor, Keith Kondakor said: “Why cannot the collection point operate from one of the many empy shops in Nuneaton?
“The Blockbuster near the train station would make a good location with parking.”

Many people agreed with this sentiment.

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council is advising people to hand deliver any important mail they have for the local authority as it is not getting any delivered.

In a statement the council said: “The closure of Nuneaton’s Royal Mail Sorting Office in Church Street means that the council is currently not receiving any mail deliveries. Anyone with urgent mail is asked to hand deliver if possible

“The sorting office has closed due to the discovery of asbestos and the Royal Mail representatives have indicated that they do not know when they will be able to reopen. The sorting office has temporarily relocated to the former Parcelforce base at Unit C4 on Three Spires Industrial Estate in Coventry but in the immediacy the council has been informed that postal deliveries will not be able to take place.

“We are able to send mail out but any residents or businesses who are planning to send important documents in to the Town Hall, Council House or depot are asked to hand deliver if possible. We understand that this may be an inconvenience and are liaising closely with Royal Mail to establish when normal service will resume.”
