Unofficial walkout by Crewe postal workers

Some 100 workers at Crewe Delivery Office walked out of work this morning, Friday, on unofficial strike.

The workers struck for three hours over allegations of bullying and harassment from management. They have since returned to work.

“Every single one of them walked out,” a CWU union official from Cheshire No.1 told Socialist Worker.

“For over 12 months they’ve been going through hell with management. Royal Mail always goes on about ‘dignity and respect’ but there’s been none of that. Workers finally said enough is enough, and took it into their own hands to walk out.”

Allegations of bullying and harassment by management were also behind earlier walkouts this year at Bridgwater Delivery Office in Somerset and other offices.

Post workers in deliveries are under immense pressure from issues such as “absorption”. This is when a worker can’t complete their round and another “absorbs” the work with no extra pay.

Post workers were set to strike nationally on 4 November. This was called off and the CWU union, which represents the workers in Royal Mail, is currently in crunch talks with the employer to get an agreement. The strike ballot has since been extended to 3 December—the last date a notice of a national strike can be served.

Deliveries is a crucial point of the talks, and it’s clear from the walkout in Crewe that the pressure workers are under in the offices has not let up.

Exact same thing at my office a few weeks ago because of bullying managers and people getting stitched up and suspended. Sat in the canteen for 4 hours before agreeing to go back to work.
