The 'Mr Postman' app lets you write letters on your iPhone or iPad. The text is typed but the app lets you add a personal touch by using a finger to create your signature via the touchscreen.

The letter is then printed out on standard 100 gsm white A4 paper and posted on your behalf, removing the need to head down to the local letterbox. Paper letters sent straight from the app cost 98p second class and £1.40 first class and are paid for instantly using PayPal.

Propeller Mobile, which invented the app, claims that Mr Postman helps ‘digital natives’ bridge the generational gap with parents and grandparents.

"Mr Postman let’s time poor people send real paper letters direct from their smart phones and tablets,"said Martin Loat of Propeller Mobile.

"The app is proving really popular with consumers who want to cut though the noise of today’s digital world with ‘old school’ paper letter correspondence and lots of people have been using it to send messages to parents and grandparents – we’ve even had a few children using the app to send present wish lists to Father Christmas.”

Mr Postman also has template letters for corresponding with businesses, allowing users to quickly send professional-looking letters to banks, building societies, utility providers and local authorities.

Users are sent an alert when a letter enters the UK postal system, and copies of previously sent letters are stored in the ‘Letter History’ section of the app.

Mr Postman is free to download from the Apple iTunes store.
