For the last 15 years post has been delivered in an efficient and timely manner to houses along Hastings Road, Battle, by our trusted postie using his pedal cycle.
We hear rumours that this service is to end and be replaced by deliveries using a postal van.
Anyone who knows this stretch of road will immediately recognise the impact of a postal van stopping every 100m or so on the kerb in relation to the flow of traffic.
Other considerations must include the safety to road users and pedestrians as there are very few natural off-road spaces available meaning a van will undoubtedly remain stationary blocking the pavement, which is hideously thin in some places already.
The proposal will increase costs to the Post Office in relation to vehicle maintenance and fuel, will cost the environment, will cost road users and will cost us living in the area as the impact on our health and safety is obvious.

I expect Moya will understand Janis's concerns and in a couple of years Hastings Road, Battle will be the only address in the UK to retain a Royal Mail cycle delivery.

Presumably every other commercial organisation has agreed to only use a bike when visiting houses along that stretch of road too.

If the duty is on P&L, the van might not even stop along that road.

Indeed, nobody living in Hastings Road ever has a parcel delivered.Mr_Pink wrote:If the duty is on P&L, the van might not even stop along that road.
They still remember 1066 and all that, although the controversy of Royal Mail introducing bicycles on delivery is now just a distant memory.

Why has nobody taken the time to explain the intricacies of park and loop and the introduction of the lightweight trolley?TrueBlueTerrier wrote:

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

having just been sad enough to look on Google maps at the area - there isn't much on the road in question
