A DELIVERY driver said he ‘acted on instinct’ after helping to foil an attempted armed robbery at Sleaford Post Office.

Garry Turner, of Doughty Cakes Ltd in Lincoln, was delivering produce to the premises in Southgate at around 4.52pm on Wednesday when a man wielding a claw hammer attempted to take money from counter staff.

Mr Turner’s boss Mark Doughty, managing director at Doughty Cakes Ltd, said he was incredibly proud of their employee.

He said: “Garry told us that when he was in the shop merchandising, he heard a man say ‘give us the money’ and he thought at first it was someone who just wanted their benefits and was being impatient but then he heard them shout it again, louder.

“He said that when he looked over, a man had his hands around the neck of a lady behind the counter and he was holding something above her head.

“Garry said he instinctively went straight over and asked the man what was going on and the man then let go of the lady.

“He said that the man tried to hit him with the hammer but Garry pushed him away and the man then ran off.”

The man was thought to be in his late teens or early twenties and of slim build.

He was dressed in black clothing with a black hooded top and he had a scarf around his face.

Mr Doughty said: “Garry has worked for us for 23 years and we are all very proud of him. I’ve told him I’m going to buy him a Superman costume to wear.”

Mr Turner declined to speak to the Target but he told Mr Doughty that he simply acted on instinct.

The investigating officer Detective Sergeant Simon Todd is appealing for anyone with information to contact him by calling the non-emergency number 101.

Alternatively they can call Crimestoppers anonymously via 0800 555 111.

"Mr Turner’s boss Mark Doughty, managing director at Doughty Cakes Ltd, said he was incredibly proud of their employee" - indeed, you never hear of Gregg's staff acting like that.
