A POSTMAN who stole various items from parcels in Harlow and damaged a door window belonging to Royal Mail.
Barry Fitzgerald, 53, of Bromley Close, admitted criminal damage and four other charges but sentencing was postponed today (Wednesday November 6) at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court.
Fitzgerald was remanded for a pre-sentence report until November 27 on unconditional bail.
He pleaded guilty to damaging a glass panel worth £200 on 28 August. He also pleaded guilty to stealing a postal packet, a recorded delivery packet, 67 energy saving lightbulbs and opening six postal packets containing DVD’s.
Prosecutor Kim Elcoat-May, for the Post Office, said: “Fitgerald started work on 4 March 1996 at the Harlow and on 27 August his estranged wife informed Royal Mail he had left her address leaving behind his employers property.
“An investigator attended at Hornbeams, Harlow and some property including the lightbulbs was found. Later, approached by the investigator at the depot he walked away and kicked the glass panel which was damaged.
“Arrested and taken to Harlow Police Station, he admitted taking out one Lovefilms postal packet containing two DVD’s, a greeting card and cheque, a signed book and the light bulbs. He said he opened the Lovefilms packet to watch the DVD’s before planning to return them. He said he had a drink problem.”
