Posties moved to join Movember after bad news close to home

A CARING group of postal workers are delivering a different message this month as they are backing a campaign to raise awareness and cash for a male health charity.

Postmen from Sutton Coldfield's main postal depot in Upper Clifton Road are to become 'Mo Bros' for the month, as they back the annual Movember campaign.

The (non) plucky posties will be growing moustaches to raise money to help stamp out prostate and testicular cancer and also assist tackling mental health issues.

And the group are doing it after one of their colleagues was diagnosed with testicular cancer last month and had an operation at hospital.

Russell Bow, from Great Barr, who is a cover postie and works all over Sutton, is organising the furry fund-raiser.

He said: "Royal Mail are backing the Movember campaign and we did it last year on a smaller scale but after we heard one of the postmen here was affected by cancer we wanted to organise our own group of Mo Bros.

"We have a lad here who has been affected and is only in his mid-20s and he only found out in the last couple of weeks.

"I have got kids and when we heard about it, it brings it home to you.

"We are having a push here to get as many postmen involved as we can and we had 15 agree to do it straight away."

Movember started in Melbourne, Australia in 2003 and has now become a global campaign with more than three million people in 21 countries taking part.

Last year 1.1 million people took part and raised £92 million.

In total more than £260 million has been raised for male health charities since the campaign began 10 years ago.

In the UK, Movember health partners are Prostate Cancer UK and The Institute of Cancer Research.

The offical rules for Movember are:.

■ Each Mo Bro must begin on Movember 1 with a clean shaven face;
■ For the entire month of Movember each Mo Bro must grow and groom a moustache;
■ There is to be no joining of the mo to side burns. That's considered a beard;
■ There is to be no joining of the handlebars to the chin. That's considered a goatee;
■ Each Mo Bro must conduct himself like a true gentleman.
