A POSTMAN has been suspended and a man has been arrested after mail was stolen from a post van parked in York city centre.
Royal Mail said a postman had been suspended from its York delivery office as an investigation was launched into a “breach of security connected to a vehicle from which mail was stolen”.
A spokeswoman said: “Suspension is normal Royal Mail procedure while we investigate this matter. Police are investigating the theft.
“We apologise to any customers affected by this incident. The safety and security of mail is of the utmost importance to this business.”
Royal Mail has not suggested that there is any suspicion of an offence by the postman.
The spokeswoman said that the mail was a mixture of first class, second class and registered mail and any customers with concerns that their mail had not been delivered should phone customer service on 08457 740740.
North Yorkshire Police said officers were investigating the theft of post from a post office van which was parked in Stonegate in York.
“The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 16, between 9.10am and 9.40am,” said a spokeswoman.
She said the postman reported that while he was making a delivery, he parked up and locked the vehicle.
“When he returned five minutes later, he found that mail had been stolen from the van,” she said.
“A 25-year-old man from York has been arrested in connection with the theft and has been released on bail while police inquiries continue.”
She appealed for any witnesses, or anyone with information which could assist officers in their investigation, to come forward and call police on 101, quoting incident number 12130179703.
A spokesman for the Communication Workers Union declined to comment.
