HE must have walked up thousands of garden paths and knocked on an equal number of doors, but postman Martin Brooks had one last delivery to make to Sherborne Village Hall Social Club.

It was himself – to meet the customers he served during his 18 years as the village postman.

More than 50 villagers crammed into the hall to thank him for his diligence and cheerfulness.

Martin, 56, who lives in Northleach said: "It was overwhelming, it was unbelievable. It was really great to see all the people there.

"I loved working on that route, delivering to Sherborne, Farmington, Turkdean and Lower Dean.

"I was a postie of the old school, after all that time the people became more friends than customers to me. I'd always check on the older ones to make sure they were okay."

One villager, Wendy Plummer, said that Martin was known for constantly whistling while on his rounds.

She said: "Someone said it was so that he didn't catch anyone unawares in the early morning."

But Martin said it was just that he enjoyed his work so much, adding: "It was an absolutely fantastic 18 years. I was outdoors all the time, even through a couple of bad winters recently. It's a beautiful part of the world and a lovely area any day."

The postie, who had to retire on medical grounds due to knee problems, received a card signed by all the villagers and a gift of money to thank him for his service.

Mrs Plummer added: "He was a fantastic postman. At the party he said he'd got the freedom of Sherborne and he has – he could go anywhere."

Light refreshments were provided to Martin and all the guests by Sherborne Village Hall Social Club.

"The postie, who had to retire on medical grounds due to knee problems" - that's what fifteen years in this job does for you, and not much prospect of another job aged 56.
