Christmas post chaos as ‘grinch’ unions plan massive disruption

A LEAKED letter has revealed union plans to cause massive disruption to Britain’s Christmas post.

A strike by Royal Mail workers is already in the pipeline for November 4 amid a bitter dispute over privatisation, pay and pensions.

And the Communication Workers Union (CWU) is planning a ballot over a boycott of competitors’ mail.

That move could disrupt the delivery of at least 580million letters and parcels in the run-up to Christmas.

A leaked letter written by CWU bosses Dave Ward and Billy Hayes goes even further – revealing a string of other disruptive methods are under discussion.

The note, dated October 16, is addressed to Royal Mail’s CWU members.

“Hardworking people depend on the Royal Mail to post Christmas presents and cards to their families”

It says: “If an agreement cannot be reached, we will soon hold a second ballot for action short of a strike enabling a boycott of the competitors’ mail.

“If necessary, a second ‘yes vote’, will also open up options for other tactics such as work to rules, overtime bans and non co-operation with unrealistic efficiency demands.” Last night senior Tories blasted the tactic.

Party chairman Grant Shapps, above, said: “Hardworking people depend on the Royal Mail to post Christmas presents and cards to their families.

“But extreme trade union bosses seem intent on putting that at risk, with this boycott threat.

“Ed Miliband has taken £1.5million from the CWU.

“If he is too weak to stand up to the Grinch union bosses who want to disrupt Christmas, he is too weak to run the country.” Royal Mail delivers around 58million items a day with approximately half sorted by its rivals.

The Direct Marketing Association, which represents the advertising mail industry and some £1billion of Royal Mail’s turnover, says the CWU strike will have a “severe” financial impact on tens of thousands of companies, charities and others.

It warned it could even lead to job cuts. Executive director Chris Combemale said: “The build-up to Christmas is a critical period.”

What about the hardworking posties that will soon be unable to afford their own christmas presents due to wage cuts or job loss?

Pity Grant Chaps and the rest of his Tory Mob aren,t HARDWORKING which is the latest tory inword for the working public. If they were ,this country would not be in the sh. t it is in. They took over an economy in trouble but that had started to stabilise and growth in the year preceeding the tory,s scraping an unworkable majority was in excess of 2%. Since the ConDEM government there has been negative growth and what they now call growth of 0.8%. The economy has still not recovered to it,s pre 2010 position. The national debt has increased under the Torys and the structural deficit has only declined because of the windfalls this government have grabbed from the Royal Mail Pension etc.

Absolutely bang on.
The government are wholly to blame for us going out on strike.
They have no one to blame but themselves if we are out over xmas.

If only we could do an honest days work for an honest days pay nowadays.
But that has all but been taken away from us.

Not really true. They present them in a manner that allows easy sorting, but they don't sort the mail completely, if at all.
The Direct Marketing Association, which represents the advertising mail industry and some £1billion of Royal Mail’s turnover, says the CWU strike will have a “severe” financial impact on tens of thousands of companies, charities and others.

Pretty sure that's going to happen anyway. Which makes this an empty threat.
