A post mistress and a villager were injured in a raid on a rural post office on Saturday.

The raid happened at Kislingbury post office and mini market early in the morning.

Neighbours said three masked men armed with coshes entered the premises, in Church Lane, and demanded money.

Before they left one of them hit the postmistress, an older lady, in the face, neighbours said.

A man who happened to be going into the post office was then coshed over the head and fell to the floor.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene and it is understood the man did not fully regain consciousness by the time he was taken to hospital. It is understood both the postmistress and the member of the public have now been discharged from hospital.

A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: “An ex-nurse who lives in the village went across to help and the poor man was still out cold. It’s a terrible attack to happen in a quiet village.”

South Northamptonshire councillor Joan Kirkbride said: “Post offices are of great value to communities and it’s absolutely appalling that they can one can be being targeted in this way.

“We don’t want people to be afraid of running or visiting post offices so this type of crime is particularly serious.”

Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to call Northamptonshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
