New post strike begins as last one ends

Christine Buckley, Industrial Editor

Postal services will be paralysed by a fresh 48-hour strike today, less than two days after the last stoppage halted mail deliveries.

The timing of the strikes each side of the weekend means that operations will be disrupted for five days.

Talks between the postal group and the Communication Workers’ Union were continuing last night at the TUC. The two sides have carried on talks during the dispute and broke off Saturday’s negotiations only at 4am yesterday. It is thought that some progress is being made in the long-running dispute over pay, pensions and modernisation plans.

In the meantime Royal Mail has hired emergency warehouse space to store the millions of undelivered items that are piling up amid the longest continuous strike for 20 years. The postal group has chosen not to seal letterboxes and has instead instructed managers to continue collections. But it is still advising people not to post items unless there is no alternative.

Postwatch, the consumer group, has said that Royal Mail is tearing itself apart because the strike action will encourage people to use other forms of communication and payment and that once they switch they are unlikely to move back.
