Anger at Holywell Post Office 'snub'

COUNCILLORS are angry over what they perceive as a lack of communication over the future of a post office.

At a meeting of Holywell town council’s town centre sub-committee, councillors reacted angrily as they learned that no further information on the future of the post office in Holywell High Street had been received.

Councillors were told in April that the Post Office was pushing ahead with plans to sell the branch, which is one of 70 the company is planning to either close or franchise nationwide in a bid to cut costs.

Residents fear that losing the branch from the high street could see a decline in trade in the area.

Following a public meeting in August, local MP David Hanson wrote to the Post Office for clarification on the future of the high street store and councillors learned on Wednesday that a response is yet to be received.

Chairman of the sub-committee, Cllr Peter Curtis, said: “We don’t want to be negative to scare off a potential partner but we need to let them know how upset we are.

“The post office is crucial to our town, it’s part of the fabric of our town.”

Cllr Peter York said he was “very disappointed” with the way things had gone so far.

“These people are letting down the people of Holywell,” he said.

A Post Office spokesman confirmed correspondence from the MP’s and AM’s offices following the public meeting with a full response being provided by the end of the week.
