Royal Mail staff discontent with bosses

The low morale of the Royal Mail workforce has been laid bare by an internal report which reveals just 28pc of the staff have confidence in the decisions of the senior management team led by chief exec Moya Greene.

Less than four in ten support Royal Mail's "strategy and direction", under a third feel "valued and recognised" while 14pc claim to have been bullied or harassed in the workplace, mainly by their immediate line manager.

Just 34pc believe the senior management team "communicates a clear vision".

The results are detailed in Royal Mail's annual employee feedback survey, carried out by Ipsos Mori and filled out by 110,000 staff.
The figures were released under the Freedom of Information Act.

Union chiefs at war with the Royal Mail over its privatisation plans leapt on the findings to claim they show "just how out of touch" the management really are.

Shown the results by the Daily Telegraph, the CWU said: "Postal workers clearly don't have confidence in many business decisions being taken, which they see putting pressure on their everyday working lives without improving services for customers.

"Bullying is an issue we have raised with Royal Mail at the highest level. We have serious concerns that bullying has increased as managers seek savings in preparation for privatisation."

Critically the survey does not address the issue of privatisation, but the findings reveal the challenge facing Moya Greene's executive team as it tries to push through the modernisation programme, at the same time as confront the growing threat of industrial action.

Royal Mail pointed out that almost two-thirds of staff feel proud to work for Royal Mail and 72pc want to remain with the organisation.

Nearly pc would recommend Royal Mail's services to a family or friend.

Yet the report reveals a worrying gulf between the management and the staff. While just 28pc have confidence in "the decisions made by senior management", 45pc answered they do not, with 22pc "neutral".

Just 31pc of the workforce feel they have opportunity to progress, 34pc feel valued and 35pc feel involved with decisions "that affect me and my work". Just 28pc feel "change is well managed", with almost 50pc insisting it is not.

Only 28pc say action has been taken as a result of the previous employee feedback survey. In a statement Royal Mail insisted the overall Employee Engagement Score of 50 compared with a national average of 56.

A spokesman added that last year, only 25pc of staff had confidence in the decisions of senior management.

He said: "Royal Mail is undertaking one of the largest transformation programmes in history. We recognise these are times of significant change and we are asking a lot of our people.

"We are redoubling our efforts to communicate with our people about the challenges we face and our strategy to address them.

"Our strategy is delivering. We have reported a strong financial performance. We are creating a commercial, customer-focused company.

"Our people are key to our transformation. With continued support and engagement of our people, we can deliver our objectives to help ensure that we are financially successful and able to access the capital needed to deliver the ongoing transformation of the business."
He also said Royal Mail did not tolerate bullying.

Unions claim 90pc of its members are against the Government's privatisation plans for Royal Mail.

They have also threatened industrial action in a fierce row over pay and pensions, turning down an 8.6pc pay rise over three years.

Business minister Michael Fallon has called on both sides to strike a deal, insisting Royal Mail has to float or sell off a stake to bring in external capital by the end of the current financial year.
