Police are urging local businesses to be vigilant for an ongoing fraud known as ‘ringing the changes.’

Dalkeith officers were alerted to this scam at Pathhead post office on Monday (August 12).

A male and female entered the premises and asked for money to be changed into a different currency.

While the shop assistant was dealing with this request the couple intentionally used confusion techniques resulting in them defrauding the shop of more than 250 euros.

The couple attempted to repeat the scam at Dalkeith post office, but were unsuccessful.

Other businesses in the region are now being asked to remain alert for this scam and report any similar instances to police immediately.

The suspects for these incidents are described only as being between 20 and 25-years-old and of Eastern European appearance.

Local area Commander Chief Inspector Jim Royan said: “The couple have entered both post offices and requested large sums of money be changed and then set about distracting and confusing the shop assistant, which has resulted in them being able to obtain more money than they were due. We would advise that businesses ask for ID when asked to change large amounts of money.”

“We are keen to hear from anyone who can help us trace these individuals and ask that anyone with information that can assist with our enquiries comes forward.

“Businesses in Midlothian should be wary of this scam and if they believe someone within their store is trying to defraud them in a similar manner, they should contact police immediately.”

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
