Locals back MP’s postcode battle

MP Alan Duncan is calling for the Royal Mail to act on the evidence of constituents and ensure Rutland is respected in the postal system.

In February, Mr Duncan issued a call to people living in the LE15 postcode area to pass on examples of companies wrongly labelling their addresses as Leicestershire, not Rutland.

Dozens of people responded, highlighting a list of 70 companies that disregard the county when sending out post. They included Tesco, Sky, Marks and Spencer, Amazon, electricity companies E-on and Npower and Halifax, as well as Government departments HMRC and the Department for Work and Pensions.

Mr Duncan has now published a template complaint letter on his website, http://www.alanduncan.org.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and is urging constituents to make their feelings known directly to the companies that get the address wrong.

Mr Duncan has sent a letter to Royal Mail chief executive Moya Greene, presenting a full list of companies and is urging the Royal Mail to crack down on companies that get it wrong.

Mr Duncan said: “Judging by the scale of the response, my appeal clearly touched a nerve with Rutlanders frustrated at being ignored.

“We are not asking for a Rutland postcode or a huge change to the system, just that they ensure Rutland is respected.

“Saying ‘Oakham, Leicestershire’ is like saying ‘London, Scotland’. It is just wrong.

“I have been banging away at the Royal Mail on this for over ten years now. It’s time for them to deliver on their promises and sort this out once and for all.”

In his letter, Mr Duncan also highlighted examples of the Royal Mail and Post Office themselves putting Leicestershire down for Rutland addresses.

"Mr Duncan issued a call to people living in the LE15 postcode area to pass on examples of companies wrongly labelling their addresses as Leicestershire, not Rutland"
Pathetic. All that's needed is 'LE15' not 'Leicestershire' or 'Rutland'.
It makes one wish Rutland Water to be extended to engulf the whole of that old little county. :nana
