HERNE Bay postal workers Joy Loyla and Kevin Senft have hosted a mini music festival at their home in Courtenay Road, Denstroude.

They chose animal charities The Brooke, which supports healthy working animals for the world's poorest communities, and the Galgos del Sol, a Spanish greyhound rescue charity based in Murcia, to benefit from the funds.

A total of £480 was raised which will be split equally between the two charities. Family and friends picnicked in the paddock while being entertained with live music and outdoor games.

Margate-based Richard Latham, from Rich Rhythms kicked off the event with a hands on audience participation African drumming workshop with his 10 djembe drums. It was a colourful and inventive musical experience for all ages. Richard also tunes, re-skins and rebuilds these beautiful instruments.

Support artistes Ain't Misbehavin played a selection of popular bluesey songs while guitarist and solo singer Tanni Rogers from Ashford enthralled with her unique vocal style.

Then resident band DRO$ played two full sets with an eclectic mix of rock, rock'n'roll, reggae and pop. DRO$ are a nine piece amalgamation of Herne Bay posties and Courtenay Road residents who play just for the fun of it. Having rehearsed most Monday evenings for the past six months their efforts were very well received with suggestions that they would now have to change their name!

There was a charity raffle, homemade cake stall and a donkey poo battleships game where people had to guess where Joy's donkey stallion, Banks, would do his droppings after 3pm that day!

Mary Harris was the winner with square F7.

The highly competitive welly wangin' competitions also helped to swell the coffers. The welly wanging winners were: Ben Riddle (men) Patti Sanders (women) and Zachary Morton (under 16's)

Joy and Kevin thanked all their helpers and May Tree Nursery for the loan of the poly tunnel pieces which made a great stage cover.

Joy said:” It was a lot of work getting the paddock ready for this event but we are so pleased that everyone had a good time and the weather was perfect."
