A letter will be sent to the chief executive of Royal Mail following concerns that the potential closure of Ipswich Mail Centre could lead to a depreciated service in Diss.
Royal Mail announced that it would be reviewing the future of its processing operation in Ipswich in response to the challenges from digital communication, competition and mail volume decline last year.
Now Diss town councillors want to know exactly how it will affect the postal service in Diss following a letter from Dave Scott, secretary of the Suffolk Amalgamated Branch of the Communication Workers Union, who fears that if the centre is closed and moved to Chelmsford as suggested, residents in Diss and the surrounding areas could receive their mail more than 90 minutes later than before.
At present mail is processed in Ipswich before it is delivered to Diss. The closure could mean post would arrive later in the day and collections would be made earlier, giving residents and businesses a smaller window to reply.
The issue was discussed at Wednesday’s town council meeting when councillors voted to write to the chief executive to ask for a response to the union’s fears. Cllr Palmer, said: “I think we have a right to be concerned about our postal service if the union’s concerns come to fruition but we don’t know the hard facts.”
A spokesman from Royal Mail said that no decision had yet been made and that the consultation was still ongoing.
As part of the modernisation, Royal Mail is changing the way it delivers mail in the IP21, IP23 and IP98 postcode areas over the next few weeks using new delivery methods and routes. Every address in Diss will receive a letter.

You can always tell when councils and their councillors have been receiving complaints etc. from residents, it's the only time they do anything.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:At present mail is processed in Ipswich before it is delivered to Diss. Pretty sure the decision has been made, prior to the consultation even starting.
