Postal deliveries could be disrupted after sorting office workers went on strike.

People living in the PE6 postal area could see their post delayed after about 200 staff at the Werrington sorting office in Peterborough walked out on Friday.

This includes the Deepings, Helpston, Baston, West Deeping and the towns and villages in between.

Peterborough branch chairman of the Communication Workers Union Andy Beeby said there had been a disciplinary issue early on Friday.

He added: “Union officials were in discussion with management throughout Friday, and have started meetings again today.

“But staff have not returned to work yet.”

Deliveries in the PE1, PE3, PE4, PE5, PE6 areas are affected by the strike, according to the union.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “Royal Mail can confirm that colleagues at Peterborough delivery office and mail centre remain on unballoted strike this morning (Monday).

“This covers deliveries in the PE1, PE2, PE3, PE4, PE5, and PE6 postcode areas.

“We apologise to customers in the Peterborough area for the disruption to their mail services and we are doing all we can to minimise this disruption. We will be attempting to deliver special delivery items today.

“Royal Mail is fully committed to the process of trying to resolve concerns of postal workers based in Peterborough by continuing to follow the national jointly agreed framework with the Communication Workers Union.”

The Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals Trust has asked patients to make sure their contact details are up to date to ensure they are not disrupted by the postal strike.

Outpatients Service Manager Neil Ritchie said: “Whilst the patient reminder system should negate any disruption to postal services, it can only work if patients have provided up-to-date contact details.

“Mobile phone numbers are particularly useful as text messages are a quick and cost-effective method of providing information.

“It is important that all patient details are accurate and if they do change address, phone numbers or GPs they advise us of this at their next visit so we can update their records”.

It’s not known when the strike will end.
