Royal Mail shame: the sins of postal workers

MORE than 100 postal workers are caught speeding every month while 15 are found to be stealing mail.

Royal Mail statistics show 1,255 postal workers were caught speeding last year (PIC POSED BY MODEL)

Statistics from the Royal Mail show that last year 1,255 postmen and women were fined for breaking the limit in the firm’s fleet while 200 were fired for pilfering post.

Speeding fines are passed to the culprits, meaning that Royal Mail staff had to fork out more than £75,000 from their wages to pay the penalties.

The figures show that although fewer letters are being posted, more speeding offences are being notched up.

Another 69 postal workers were fined after being caught on camera jumping red traffic lights.

The rise in speeding offences comes despite many Royal Mail vehicles being fitted with speed limiters and employees being briefed on the dangers of going too fast. One employee was clocked at 87mph on the A23 London to Brighton road in Bolney, West Sussex, which has a 70mph limit.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “Drivers are solely responsible for the speed of their vehicle while on duty and for adhering to red lights. Any fines issued to individual drivers are required to be paid by them. Ensuring that all drive within the legal speed limits is embedded within the training.”

Staff can also face disciplinary proceedings for failing to stick to the rules of the road.

The spokesman added: “Royal Mail has undertaken a widescale retro-fitting campaign of speed limiting the fleet. All bar a very small number of vehicles have their speed limited.”

Of the 200 staff caught stealing post, all but four ended up in court with the remainder accepting a police caution.

The Royal Mail spokesman said: “The vast majority of our people are scrupulously honest and take huge care over the mail entrusted to them by our customers.”

It was also revealed that one million pieces of post every month are destroyed because they could not be delivered or returned to the sender.

perhaps if the workload was more do-able we wouldn't have to speed around?

Nobody has to speed around for any reason.
This is just plain stupidity.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Who do they think delivers the increasing number of packets and parcels which means more van time for deliveries? Bad journalism to say the least. Why let facts get in the way of bullsheet. But as has been mentioned already.... why rush around? :hmmmm
Union what Union? Do we have a union?

Agree totally.
I assume that those who are being caught are speeding to get done ASAP to go home before their finishing time, or to get back to beat some others to the OT.

The figures show that although fewer letters are being posted, more speeding offences are being notched up.
And so................that proves that............................?????

As far as I can see the only thing that show is that some hack had column inches to fill. Or is there a correlation between those two facts that I'm missing? :hmmmm
