RESIDENTS are being urged to stand up and fight for their post office.

The Co-operative’s plans to close its store on Dean Road, Rhosnesni, on September 28, has been met with anger because it includes the closure of the sub-post office branch there.

The Co-operative says many of the post office services would move to its supermarket on Borras Park Road.

But Cllr Anne Evans, the councillor for Rhosnesni ward on Wrexham Council, said if the post office closes on Dean Road it would ‘destroy a strong community hub’.

Cllr Evans said she is annoyed and disappointed the community were not consulted on the proposed closure.

But after doing research she said the post office cannot close without consultation and has asked the people who use it to stand up and be counted.

She said: “I was puzzled as to how this could be the case as the post office is a public body providing a public service and consultations had not taken place in the local area regarding the possible relocation of this service.

“The announcement has caused consternation in this locality, as this corner shop with post office services has been a community hub for many years and has been a valuable facility for residents of the area, particularly for older people.

“Because of the potential adverse effects for the area I have made every effort to discover the actual position regarding consultation and following my enquires it has been announced that there will be a six week local consultation period by the post office.

“This will be carried out very soon and a decision will subsequently be made regarding this important service to the area.

“I will make every effort to ensure as many local residents as possible are made aware and are able to express their views as soon as the consultation period is announced.

“We need to fight to keep this.”

In a letter to Cllr Evans, senior stakeholder manager at the Post Office Non Tudur Williams said: “I’ve spoken to colleagues who have confirmed that the Co-operative have expressed an interest in moving the current post office to its Borras Park store.

“The move is subject to a six week public consultation period, which is due to begin shortly.”
