Airdrieonians legend Alan Lawrence has quit his job with the post office amid an investigation into the theft of cash.
Lawrence, who is known as Nipper, made over 200 league appearances for the Diamonds during three spells at the club in the 1990s.
He quit his post at the Royal Mail delivery office in Airdrie after he was accused of stealing money from letters.
Criminal charges may now be considered following the completion of the investigation by Royal Mail bosses.
The 50-year-old bagged over 50 league goals for the club and played in the 1992 and 1995 Scottish Cup finals.
He also spent three seasons as assistant manager at Airdrie United before quitting that role at the end of last season.
A Royal Mail spokesman said: “We can confirm that an employee at Airdrie delivery office has resigned and our enquiries into theft and interference of the mail are ongoing.
“Royal Mail has a zero-tolerance approach to any dishonesty and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women, who are honest and hardworking and who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely.
“The safety and security of mail is of the utmost importance to this business and Royal Mail will not allow the actions of any individual to damage the good reputation of our thousands of hard-working postmen and women.”
Mr Lawrence declined to comment on the matter.

Not sure if it was fair to name him(in the newspaper that is)
At the moment it doesn't appear that he has been dismissed or charged with anything, obviously they've skirted around the accusation a bit but it's there for all to see.
Seems a bit legally ropey to me.
Not making any call on his guilt or innocence but not very nice to see and obviously someone from inside the business has fed them this story which again is not really on.
