Villagers voice fear that delivery office is due for move

ROYAL Mail is fending off rumours that its Mumbles delivery office will close on July 1 and move to its main base in Llansamlet.

Several residents in Mumbles and the surrounding area said they would not be happy to travel across the city to pick up letters and parcels that could not be delivered first time round.

The Royal Mail said it was "completing a feasibility study" into moving the delivery office.

A spokeswoman added: "This will include our intention to retain a callers' office facility for the collection of first-time undelivered letters and parcels within the current location."

There is no suggestion whatsoever that Mumbles Post Office would be affected, and sub-postmaster Malcolm Sharp said one possibility being looked at was setting up a collection service at his premises, although no decision had been made.

"I don't think they (Royal Mail) would leave people in the lurch," he said.

One resident from the area, who asked the Post not to name him, claimed Royal Mail staff had been told weeks ago that the delivery office, which is at the rear of the post office, was to close on July 1.

He said people would loathe a cross-city journey to pick up parcels.

"It's a nightmare," he said.

Another resident, Claire Williams, said: "If we have to go to the Enterprise Zone this would cause a lot of hardship for the elderly and people without transport."

Oystermouth councillor Tony Colburn added: "If the Royal Mail facility were to close it would be a great loss to the whole Mumbles area, and would cause very considerable inconvenience."

The Royal Mail spokeswoman said items could be left with a neighbour if the recipient is away. Deliveries can also be rearranged free of charge to the recipient's house or local post office.

Asked to comment on the July 1 closure claim, she replied: "No official date (has been) announced yet."

Yes they would. In a second. As soon as they decide it will save money, closed.
They don't care about causing problems for customers.
If they do agree to leave parcels at his office, that will be quite a commitment from him, one that a future postmaster may not want. And it will take up space. Not to mention all the crap from customers collecting parcels that aren't there, or that they need ID for, but haven't brought etc.
Sometimes, I wish I wasn't a Rep.

it happened to our delivery office they moved us 12 miles. the local post office was told he had to act as a collection point as royal mail pay towards it, in the end he was happy as more customers come to pick up parcels and sometimes buy other products. I think they sold the depot for £80,000 not a lot off money to justify 24 miles extra a day for each van.
