A GROUP of adventurous posties are hoping to make a special delivery – a big parcel of cash for Worcester’s new breast unit.
The group will ditch their red vans for hiking boots as they step out for the Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign’s mission to create a one-stop shop breast unit at 220 Newtown Road, near Worcester’s main hospital.
The posties, who are either delivery postmen or drivers based at Worcester’s Westbury Street or Wainwright Road, are taking part in the 31-mile Worcestershire Way walk between Bewdley and Malvern tomorrow.
The group aims to set off at about 6am and has been getting in shape for the big walk.
Ian Draper, who has helped organise the day, will be joined by Stu Rooke, Andrew Gillet, Tony Waterhouse, Martin Woods, Andrew Mitchell, Andrew Benjamin, Lee Richardson, Richard Stock, Paul Gummery, Lee Jones and Wayne Jones.
Friends and family also aim to join the postmen on the day.
The walk is partially being held in memory of former colleague Julie Clinton, who lost her battle with cancer a few years ago, while Mr Draper’s sister, Lisa Gwilliam, of Lower Wick, Worceter, has also battled against breast cancer.
Mr Draper, of St John’s, Worcester, hopes the group can raise at least £1,500.
“All the treatment my sister had was fantastic, but she found herself having to go from Worcester to Cheltenham and back to Worcester. A centralised unit for Worcester will benefit everyone. The idea of the unit would be fantastic. Everybody has been in contact with somebody who has had breast cancer or cancer of any form.”
Your Worcester News has supported the campaign since it was launched in October 2009 with the generosity of local people taking the campaign over half-way to its total.
The unit has been designed with input from patients so it is less clinical and more comfortable. To sponsor the postmen, visit justgiving.com/Ian-Draper1, justgiving. com/teams/Postal and justgiving.com/Richard-Stock2.
