SINGING postal workers who found fame on a TV show have released a single to raise money for charity.

The Bristol Royal Mail Choir, which has six members from North Somerset, was set up for last year’s The Choir: Sing While You Work programme on BBC 2.

Although they lost out to the choir from Severn Trent Water, the 30 singers have continued to rehearse together and have now released their first single.

Jacky Seymour, from Nailsea, who is a soprano in the Royal Mail Choir, said: “Since the TV programme we’ve decided to carry on, to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK because Royal Mail is offering to match fund it this year.

“We went off to a recording studio to record Abide With Me, featuring The X Factor winner Joe McElderry.

“The single has now come out as a download and has been played on Radio Bristol. It’s also available on Amazon or iTunes.”

The TV show featured Gareth Malone setting up choirs in four different workplaces and transforming them into singers to compete against each other.

Speaking about the show, Jacky, aged 47, said: “It was absolutely brilliant. It was all very surreal.

“Occasionally people do recognise us and it’s lovely when customers say they were supporting us.

“We all feel so lucky to be part of this choir, and have had terrific support from our local communities. Working with David Ogden as our choirmaster has been a huge boost as well.”

The rest of the North Somerset singers are Sarah Iles, from Weston, Ruth Davis, who lives in Nailsea, and Kevin Harrington and Heather Joy, from Portishead.

The choir is now keen to sing for community groups and at functions to raise money for charity.

So far members have raised £14,000, without the profits from their single or Royal Mail match funding.
