Officials also reiterated support for the so-called universal service, under which post is delivered to any address in the UK for the same price
Rural post boxes are here to stay – despite a fall in people sending mail.
Industry regulator Ofcom is extending protections against post boxes being removed.
At the moment, the protections apply to just 61 of the 121 post code areas across the country.
Officials also reiterated support for the so-called universal service, under which post is delivered to any address in the UK for the same price.
Claudio Pollack, Ofcom consumer group director, said: “Consumers and businesses across the UK have told us that they place a high value on the universal postal service.
“Our decision not to change that service means the needs of postal users will continue to be met.”
But the Communication Workers Union said the report failed to tackle the competitive threat from rival postal operators to Royal Mail.
General secretary Billy Hayes added: “The case for low wages and a race to the bottom have surfaced in submissions to this consultation.”

Its a pity the regulator does not protect those other types of "access points" otherwise known as Post Offices!!

"Rural post boxes are here to stay" but when Scotland gets independence most of them won't be the responsibility of Royal Mail.

Its all very well saving the boxes, Queen's head on stamps and 6 day delivery USO, its all a meaningless nostalgic gesture as after privatisation all that will be forgotten when the money men takes over, just look across the water at the Dutch experience to get an idea of what will happen.
