A TYPO in a guide to Whitstable has had customers convinced the town's post office is set to move to Budgens.

Copies of the Whitstable Residents' Guide 2013/2014 posted through doors recently describe the supermarket as "newsagent, off-licence, general store and... post office".

But manager John Holloben said this was simply a mistake.

He said: "It's a typo in the guide. The owner also runs Londis in Blean, which has a post office and we think the guide got muddled up and put in the same description.

"We heard the post office might be moving and we have considered the possibility of using upstairs but we haven't approached the post office and this would be a long way off. It's not on the cards."

The space was once a cinema, a Chinese restaurant and even a hairdressers and now is used for storage.

The Post Office is seeking a retail partner for the Gladstone Road office as part of its bid to reduce the £40 million annual losses of the Post Office network.

The company insists there will still be a post office in the town even if no retail partner is found. There will also be a six-week public consultation if a retail partner is found.

Elizabeth and Pete Bennett of the Whitstable Fish Market and Crab and Winkle Restaurant in the harbour have offered to rehome the post office to save it from big business, but need permission from landlord Canterbury City Council and Whitstable Harbour Board.
