Ian Murray letter to Moya Greene on Royal Mail bonuses

Dear Moya,
I write with regards to recent reports that Royal Mail managers have received a significant increase in annual bonuses this year.
Whilst I recognise that hard work and success should be recognised, on this occasion consumers will be understandably surprised that the rewards that are being given at this time.
I fully appreciate the great job that has been done over recent years by both Royal Mail and unions in modernising our much cherished institution, but individuals and businesses will be dismayed and frustrated when stamp prices have increased disproportionately and delivery standards have slipped.
Indeed, it would be concerning if Royal Mail’s remuneration policy works on the basis of an automatic reward rather than the evidence of merit and further begs the question if increasing bonuses should be priority for Royal Mail at this time given the need for further investment.
I would be very grateful if you could expand on the justification for these payments and provide reassurance that these are not made at the expense of the service which individuals and business are reliant on.
Thank you for taking the time to consider these issues and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely
Ian Murray MP
Shadow Minister for Employment Relations, Consumer and Postal Affairs

Of course the bonuses for the managers are merited. The bullying and harassing of staff getting them to lapse for our bonus brought great stress upon managers

When bonuses relate to Quality we end up with what happened in the West of Scotland a couple of years ago or Artics used as "storage facilities".
When bonuses relate to savings we end up with an increase in Bullying and Harassment, lapsing just to show "on paper" savings misreporting of traffic/performance/overtime.
When bonuses relate to employee engagement we end up with rather dodgy goings on relating to the "have your say" returns including management "coaching",some members not receiving the survey and some not returned.
When bonuses relate to safety we have under-reporting of accidents/re-classification as incidents/blameworthy and members being denied access to the ERICA system.
It doesn't take a genius to work out that the bonus system does not reward "success" but instead encourages bad practice and in some cases immoral and even unlawful activity.

Smack on Fish. Wherever there is a pot of money to be dished out, corruption will rear it,s ugly head, whether it,s expenses or bonuses. I always regarded a bonus as a reward for some sort of exemplary deed or performance, duly ratified before any money transfers hands. This bonus appears to be dished out to all management regardless of performance, misdeed, bullying, harassing you name it.

Any sort of a bonus for management, is a real kick in the teeth for hardworking staff at the coal face. Nothing more, nothing less.

what stinks more is that management will now turn around and say that there is no money for a pay increase and we should all tighten our belts

I kind of feel dirty because I find myself supporting something an MP has done.
Although, I'll be further impressed if he actually gets a) a response, and b) if it is actually from Moya herself, and not one of her overpaid and underworked lackies. And I didn't mean any OPG either.
Basically agree with all the comments on this thread.

That Labour MP is a fruitcake, the kind of fruitcake that has lost me after a lifetime voting for them.
His words betray him.....'I fully appreciate the great job that has been done over recent years by both Royal Mail and unions in modernising our much cherished institution.'
Anything said before, and after, that sentence, is a perfect example of how postal workers, and the postal service, can be used as some kind of political football by the self-serving creeps that inhabit the houses of parliament.
Our industry hasn't been 'modernised', it has been cut to the bone.

In the last week or so, the CMA (managers union) rejected this year's pay offer (which I think is for the year which finishes in March) and are now off to ACAS for talksmartin the green wrote:what stinks more is that management will now turn around and say that there is no money for a pay increase and we should all tighten our belts![]()

At least their union has got them an offer. We are just 4 weeks away from the time our pay increment is due and what have we got so far. SFA
