Dumbarton postman's warning after Royal Mail threatens to close depot http://www.lennoxherald.co.uk/dunbarton ... -32840395/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The closure of Dumbarton’s Royal Mail depot will cause severe disruption to residents across the area, postmen have warned.

Mail bosses are proposing to shut the delivery office in the town centre but posties have insisted the move would lead to late post and customers having to travel to Alexandria to collect undelivered mail.

One postman, who asked to remain anonymous, said residents will suffer if plans to move operations to Alexandria delivery office go ahead.

It’s feared the move would particularly affect the elderly and less mobile.

Royal Mail confirmed it will carry out a review at the Dumbarton facility by consulting staff and unions.

The worker , who was given the news last week, said: “They tell us it’s at a very early stage but I know a document has already been prepared entitled “proposed merger”. Needless to say, the staff won’t get a say.

“Royal Mail are trying to save cash all over the country by merging units. Aside from the impact on staff, the obvious main impact is on customers.

“They face later deliveries, and much further to travel to pick up parcels. Imagine the elderly from Dumbarton East trying to get to Alexandria?”

Royal Mail will reveal the outcome of the review later this year. Job losses are not anticipated with all Dumbarton staff expected to relocate to the Alexandria depot.

A statement read: “If we decide to relocate, we will make every effort to minimise any disruption in the service we provide to customers as any changes are implemented.”
