Keith has joined the calls from campaigners in Kent who are protesting against the closure of a Royal Mail delivery office in Whitstable.
In a letter to the Canterbury Times Keith highlighted the fact that the closure of the facility would have a negative effect on Canterbury residents as well as those living in Whitstable.
Keith’s letter in the Cantebury Times:
“I am greatly concerned about the proposed closure of the Whitstable Royal Mail Delivery Office.
This short-sighted proposal is flawed in a number of ways. If realised, this proposal will be a great burden for the people of Whitstable, especially older and more frail residents, who will have to travel all the way to Canterbury to collect parcels which could not be left with neighbours.
This change would see an estimated 800 miles travelled on the roads every day coming from both staff who would be forced to make the journey and Royal Mail vans. This would be expensive and, because of the extra air pollution created, bad for Canterbury residents’ health. The people of Canterbury hardly need more traffic clogging up their already congested streets.
It is for these reasons that I fully support the actions taken by local campaigners and the trade unions involved in this dispute. Let us hope that Royal Mail see sense and keep this valuable resource open.”
Keith also wrote a letter to the Chief Executive of Royal Mail asking for the decision to close the delivery office to be reconsidered. Keith ended that letter by saying:
“I do hope that a way forward can be found in the existing three week period for a review of the closure decision. To press ahead with closure does have serious consequences for the public, your staff and the environments of Whitstable and Canterbury.”
The campaign against the proposed closure continues. You can reach the campaigners on Facebook.
