SPECIALLY-prepared packets were introduced to the round of a Wirral postman after reported losses of birthday cards and contents, Wirral Magistrates were told.
A Scottish £10 note that was in one of the packets was later used by the postman to make a purchase at a newsagent's store, said Royal Mail prosecutor Julie Fitzgerald.
David Bernard Cawley under questioning admitted opening four packets in search of money and he said he had stolen about £100 from packages over a period of about six weeks.
Cawley,39, of Raleigh Road, Leasowe, but who said he was presently staying in Sheffield, pleaded guilty to two charges of theft of postal packets. He also admitted providing false information when applying for work as a postman.
Miss Fitzgerald said Cawley had been a postman for two years but he would not have been taken on had he revealed he had some spent convictions.
Tessa Hinder, defending, said Cawley was desperate to obtain work and lied to get the job as postman.
Later issues in his personal life led to him becoming desperate for money and he made a foolish decision to remove cash from postal items.
Magistrates told Cawley there had been a serious breach of trust with him being fraudulent from the outset.
They suspended for 12 months a total of 12 months' imprisonment.
The court also made a 12-month supervision order to include attending a Think First programme and Cawley must serve 180 hours of unpaid work.
He must pay £1,080 for the cost of the investigation into the offences, £600 court costs and £100 for the money stolen.
