It’s last post for Holbeach sorting office this weekend when it closes its doors for the final time on Monday.

The work currently carried out at the building in Barrington Gate will be transferred to Spalding’s sorting office following an efficiency review by Royal Mail.

The company has blamed a decline in the volume of mail and increasingly tough trading conditions on the move – which was fiercely opposed by staff and residents.

They enlisted the help of South Holland and the Deepings MP John Hayes to save the sorting office, but their fight was in vain after staff were told the building had been sold from under their feet.

The closure is still unpopular with some Royal Mail workers, with one, who wished to remain anonymous because of fears of reprisals from bosses, saying he feared it would lead to “Russian-style bread queues” forming at Holbeach Post Office as residents collect their undelivered parcels from there.

Communication Workers’ Union area delivery representative Simon Peach said many staff were “not overly happy” about the closure, adding: “They never wanted it to go but it was basically sold from underneath them and for the public in Holbeach it is not necessarily a good thing.”

But there have been no job losses as a result, with three full-time and one part-time posts being created at Spalding sorting office.

He also said the extra business at Holbeach Post Office could secure its future.

Mr Peach added: “We are hoping that the majority of customers will not notice any great changes. The postmen in Holbeach do a great job and will do what they can to ensure deliveries are not affected.”
