Shock closure of Normanton Post Office closure

MYSTERY surrounds the sudden closure of Normanton Post Office.

It shut last Thursday and it still remains unclear when it will reopen.

People were left queueing outside the building on Market Place, Normanton.

A sign stating it was closed “until further notice” left customers having to travel to Altofts or to the other side of the town to post parcels and collect money.

A spokeswoman for the Post Office refused to comment on why it closed.

Local campaigner Paul Dainton said it was another blow, following the closure of The Upper Altofts Post Office on George Street four years ago.

He said: “It is appalling. It has left a lot of vulnerable elderly people struggling.

“It was well-used and I cannot understand how it has occurred. Someone must have known it was going to happen.”

MP Yvette Cooper said: “Losing the town centre post office in the middle of the Christmas rush is a real nightmare.

“We need this sorted out and re-opened as fast as possible.

“It’s really inconvenient for people who use the branch in the town centre having to travel to Altofts or Woodhouse, and a real shame as it’s only recently been re-furbished.

“I’ve contacted the national Post Office managers to find out what is going on and urge fast action to sort it out.”

A Post Office spokeswoman said: “We are doing everything possible to restore services as quickly as possible.

“We would like to thank all our customers for their patience and we hope to restore services as soon as possible.

“Once again, we would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by this temporary closure.”

The nearest option is Altofts Post Office, on Church Road.
