Saving Europe’s post from the law of the jungle

-Europa Post and Logistics has launched its last ditch campaign to save Europe’s universal postal service and to protect the pay and conditions of nearly two million postal workers.

Early next week the European Union’s Council of Ministers begins discussion in Luxembourg on plans to throw open the postal market by 2011/2013 without any clear directive on how postal services to rural, mountain and island-living citizens will be financed.
Up to now a protected area (monopoly) on mail of up to 50 grams has enabled traditional operators to cross subsidise profitable urban services to ensure a postal service to all citizens at an affordable price.

Without a taxpayer subsidy the big courier companies and the other new operators that will spring up will simply cherry pick profitable services.

UNI-Post & Logistics is pressing the Council of Ministers to allow those countries that so choose to keep a protected area sufficient to guarantee the provision of a universal service.

“The universal postal service has worked well to bring Europeans closer together for more than 100 years - a complete free-for-all will wreck that service,â€

not if Gordon's got any say in it, the right wing papers haven't upped the Euro-sceptic anti for nothing. The State does subsidise big national companies like Tax Credits etc .

Three CHEERS for John Pedersen :Applause
I`m a bit worried by the `last ditch` bit though - Too little to late? And as usual no one especially the public knows F**k all about it!!
Can we do anything to help/support,or does it just go through the motions without any input/referendum by those people it affects. I know the answer is probably or certainly - depending on your level of apathy and/or cynicsysm - (excuse spelling). But if ther`s a chance we can support this we must!
The public even now do not know the real reasons for our IA -`it`s just the posties wanting more money`- hiding of information and disinformation worked well to RM`s advantage. Why did it happen?
We need to make the public aware of what we`re fighting for, negotiating behind closed doors dosn`t work for us or the public - our customers. The `Universal Service`with all that it implies past and future as stated by John Pedersen, should be defended tooth and nail - but no one knows whats happening. We - the CWU need to communicate!!
I have`t used these before but - :lfo :cfo

I agree! The public thinks we are striking just for more money.I've had lots of conversations with people on my walk, some even retired Postmen, and they are genuinely shocked when I tell them what the RM wants us to accept. If we can get a sizeable amount of the public on our side it can only strengthen our position for the fight ahead.

Right If it`s apparent that SOME MP`s,Journalists(?) are in our corner and voicing their concerns.we definately need a whole lot more to make clear what this fight is about.INFORMATION-How do we get it out? :confused
