OPPORTUNISTIC thieves attacked and robbed a Royal Mail worker in Langley Green as he carried thousands of pounds back to his van.
Paul Sivyer had just collected the security box, which was thought to contain around £20,000, from the Martin's Post Office in Langley Green when an afro-Caribbean male tripped him up and grabbed the box from his hand.
He said:"I walked out the shop and a guy tripped me up. I took a couple of whacks in my back when I went down but that was about it."
Stunned on-lookers watched as the brave post office employee got to his feet and chased the two male robbers along the parade of shops and down Martyers Avenue. But the thieves were nowhere to be seen.
The robbers, who were both believed to be wearing dark clothing, jumped helpless Paul at around midday and two shocked witnesses called police immediately.
Police later recovered the money in the area of the Holiday Inn, Horley.
