BURTON’S postal sorting office is to be expanded so the building can cope with larger queues.

The news of the building’s upgrade came as Burton’s MP Andrew Griffiths visited the Royal Mail staff as they prepared Christmas deliveries.

Officials decided to expand the centre, in Falcon Close off Hawkins Lane, after claims were made that its waiting area was too cramped, forcing customers to queue outside in the rain during busy times.

Mr Griffiths said: “People were previously having to queue outside the sorting office, but now they are building a new waiting room and customer service area.

“This will come as a lovely Christmas present for Royal Mail visitors and staff in Burton.

“From now on there will be no more queuing outside the building in the rain and the cold to collect your latest eBay purchase or gift for a loved one.”

Mr Griffiths said he visited Royal Mail staff each Christmas.

He said: “At this time every year the workload increases dramatically for everybody involved in sorting and delivery.

“It cheers everybody up to get a Christmas card and it is an incredible amount of hard work for the Royal Mail team, so I am always pleased to pass on my thanks.

“The staff in Burton are now in full swing for Christmas.”

Dave Paddison, Royal Mail delivery office manager in Burton, said: “Christmas is the busiest time of year for Royal Mail. Our people really do pull out all the stops throughout the year to ensure mail is delivered quickly, but even more so over the busy festive period. We are grateful that Andrew Griffiths came along to see the hard work that goes on behind the scenes.”
