Royal Mail suspends deliveries of leaflets

Royal Mail has cancelled its door-to-door deliveries of leaflets for the next three weeks, as the next round of national strike action looms. The group has told its door-to-door, mainly advertising, customers that it will not be able to carry out the work for more than 80 million items in a move that shows its lack of confidence in being able to avert four days of national walkouts beginning next week. Talks between the two sides resumed yesterday, but the Communication Workers Union is angry over Royal Mail’s plans to cut costs and close its final salary pension scheme to all employees. D2D in general is delivered to every door and during a strike and in the period afterwards getting to every address is not practical, and takes up considerable prep time to get them into the frames, and the renumeration per item is very small. It only makes sense to do this as part of the regular preparation.

However, TNT has bought a circular distribution company which could probably take up some of these contracts. I wonder if RM have outsourced it to them in areas they cover, a reverse DSA almost.

This is something I think RM should consider in future. Why not use capacity in competitors sorting machines, especially flat sorters rather than necessarily upgrade the machines themselves? Might sound crazy but the future will not look like it does today, you only need to see what's going on in Teelcoms to see where things are going

There can be method in that madness but sorry Fozzie that sounds like outsourcing "non -core" functions which is exactly what RM want as on paper it's cheaper , and there's all those non unionised temporary staff on NMW .

If ever proof was need that RM will not back down and try resolve the issue this is it:

We regret that this industrial action will have a significant impact on the Door to Door service during this period and for sometime afterwards whilst our operation concentrates fully on service recovery. As a result of this disruption we will apply force majeure for contracts scheduled for delivery during weeks commencing 8th October, 15th October and 22nd October as we are not able to provide our normal delivery service.

Remember some time ago, RM said D2D was the way forward and a big money maker. If it's that big a money maker, why cancel it? (not that i'm complaining!) More spin from within, me thinks.

If any weight was needed for your argument - I was a customer with BT and transferred to sky because the calls were cheaper and broadband was £22 a month cheaper all in all I was saving about £30 a month. Just this very day I received a call from BT asking if there was anything they could do to win back my custom - I explained the price plan I was paying sky and he admitted that BT couldn't compete - despite the fact that both telephone and broadband are through the self same exchange. It is apparently cheaper for BT to allow third parties to run these services than run them using their own staff!!!!

Most people dislike door to doors but if they were to go permanantly thats £1300 a year missing from my annual wage,i dont know about anyone else but i cant afford to lose that!

Ive heard that basic pay will increase by 1.5% of we loose D2D...that means WE deliver them and the people that dont (matrix, processing) get the payment...ARRRGGGHH!!!!!

Has anyone else heard that of the plans to have say 5 items, but all in one envelope so you don't have to prep them individually? sounds alright to me - as long as you get paid for all 5. probably won't happen- far too sensible for the modern day RM

Door 2 Door/Walk Bundling Centres


CWU Headquarters has been informed, via its Field Officials (and not formally by Royal Mail), that the business has written to Door 2 Door customers and informed them that they will not be able to provide a normal delivery service during weeks commencing the 8th/15th and 22nd October.

Royal Mail has strongly advised these customers to keep hold of their items during these weeks and not drop them at the Walk Bundling Centre.

Equally, they have advised hauliers acting on behalf of customers that they can leave the items at the Walk Bundling Centres, whilst Royal Mail make contact with the customers and potentially make arrangements for those items to be recollected.

The immediate impact of this action is the lack of work in Walk Bundling Centres during this period. Local Representatives are therefore advised to engage with their local managers, in line with the IR Framework, and seek to reach agreement on staffing issues during this period in a similar fashion to the negotiations that take place during the Christmas period when Door 2 Door collections traditionally cease.

Clearly, these discussions and agreement/disagreements should be progressed with exceptional pace.
