Olympic gold medal champion Tim Baillie visited Edinburgh mail centre to see how we are set to deliver a first class Christmas throughout the east of Scotland.

We are the champions

Canoeist Tim from Westhill, Aberdeen swept to Olympic victory for TeamGB during the London 2012 Games. During his visit, he saw first hand the huge extra effort being put in by our colleagues in the run up to Christmas.

Mail centre manager, James Jack, said: ‘Edinburgh mail centre, like all our operational sites, is starting its busiest period of the year with a massive increase in the volumes of parcels and letters for Christmas.

‘It was a real morale boost for staff to hear about Tim’s Olympic experiences and hear him describe how he felt when he won and got his own stamp and gold post box.’

Tim said: ‘My visit has shown me how hard Royal Mail’s postal delivery teams work in the lead up to Christmas.

‘I told all the staff that being an Olympic champion meant hard work and dedication.

‘All postmen and women and mail centre workers are champions too. They make sure that everyone gets their presents and cards delivered in time for a first class Christmas.’

During Christmas 2011, we delivered 180 million items of Christmas mail in Scotland.

On the busiest day last year, we handled around 10.5 million items of mail across the country – which is more than double the normal daily average mailbag. Edinburgh mail centre sorted 4.4 million items of mail on the busiest day last year.
