Workers Evacuated in Gas Blaze


NEARBY workers were evacuated after fire broke out at the Royal Mail depot on the outskirts of Doncaster yesterday.
Fire chiefs said that a worker accidentally cut through a gas main at 11.17am at the sorting off ice at Middle Bank, off White Rose Way.

He alerted staff before the blaze took hold. Staff from King Asia Food nearby were evacuated as a precaution.

Three fire engines and 15 firefighters from Doncaster and Edlington were called to the scene adn remained there for two hours.

South Yorkshire Fire Service's incident commander Andy Bartle said: "The gas would have escaped and found some sort of ignition source and the flames took hold.

"The main gas pipe was isolated shortly before 1.30pm and the flames died down. We are damping down the incident but it is now back to business as usual."

There were no casulties and the blaze was not expected to affect deliveries. In a statement Royal Mail said: "Staff have not been evacuated and there has been no impact on operations."
