Responding to Royal Mail interim results Business Minister Michael Fallon said:

"Today’s results from Royal Mail are encouraging, showing how Royal Mail staff and management together with the Government’s reforms, have put the company on the road to sustainable health and long term viability.
“Parliament decided, via the Postal Services Act 2011, to inject private capital into the company in order to secure the future of the universal postal service. The structure and timing remain open, but Government is committed to doing that to ensure the ongoing viability of the company."

Notes to editors:

1. The Government's economic policy objective is to achieve 'strong, sustainable and balanced growth that is more evenly shared across the country and between industries'. It set four ambitions in the ‘Plan for Growth’ (PDF 1.7MB), published at Budget 2011:

- To create the most competitive tax system in the G20
- To make the UK the best place in Europe to start, finance and grow a business
- To encourage investment and exports as a route to a more balanced economy
- To create a more educated workforce that is the most flexible in Europe.

Work is underway across Government to achieve these ambitions, including progress on more than 250 measures as part of the Growth Review. Developing an Industrial Strategy gives new impetus to this work by providing businesses, investors and the public with more clarity about the long-term direction in which the Government wants the economy to travel.

1/ We have a tax system that allows the rich and businesses to abscond from our tax system

2/We have poured billions into our banks in order for them to finance small and medium business and allowed the banks to stash this money away in order to finance end of year bonuses for the big bosses and their traders.

3/Their is no encouragement for the millions of small investors, which are mainly those over 55. They have saved for their retirements and cannot get a decent income return on capital to upgrade their state and private pensions, if they are lucky enough to have them.

4/Successive governments have hoodwinked our children into believing that they have great academic futures, by setting grading systems that years ago would have meant failed exam results for many. We need to go back to better academic result management and for those that are not up to a standard there should be much better secondary education providing the opportunities to train towards vocational opportunities. All we have seen is a mismanagement and fudging of the true state of our educational system. As for flexible workforce, as we know very well at Royal Mail, flexibility is only in the eyes of the employer and what benefit they can derive from it. No benefit, no flexibility.
