Post Office site relocation row

Rumours that Skegness Post Office may relocate to a department store’s second floor have met an unenthusiastic response from town councillors and residents alike.

Skegness town clerk Steve Larner said the Post Office had ‘identified a suitable replacement’ for its current location in the Hildreds Centre Co-operative, after the supermarket announced last December that it did not intend to host the facility beyond 2012.

Although the Post Office had not confirmed the new site with Mr Larner, several councillors at last Wednesday’s meeting said they believed it was a ‘second floor building’, which would support rumours reported in last week’s Standard that it could be Beales Department Store on Lumley Road.

Having urged the Post Office to ensure its replacement site ‘offered the same level of service and ease of access’ councillors said they were disappointed with the new site.

Coun Steve Kirk said: “If it’s a second floor then it’s not going to be very close to a car park so I think we’ve been totally ignored.”

And Coun Sue Binch said she was ‘concerned about pensioners if the lift did not work.’

Comments made by Skegness residents on the Standard’s Facebook page also expressed concerns about the new location, with many suggesting its former site at Lumley Square on the one-way system would be better.

Mike Crowley posted: “It would be better off back at the original site on the one way system, far better location”

The Post Office is expected to announce its replacement site this week. Mr Larner also said the Co-op would keep the current site open beyond December if necessary.
