POSTAL workers will hold a mass meeting outside their Royal Mail depot tomorrow – the same day ballot papers asking them to vote on strike action are sent out.

The Communication Workers Union is predicting a big majority in favour of strike action when ballots are counted and has warned deliveries in the run-up to Christmas will be affected.

Mail is normally delivered to the BS4 and BS14 postcode areas, including Knowle, Hengrove and Brislington, from the depot in Mead Street.

The dispute centres on claims of understaffing and overwork which is leading to undelivered mail piling up at the depot.

CWU Bristol branch official David Wilshire said: "Following the meeting we will be sending a proposal aimed at resolving the dispute to Royal Mail. If they don't grasp the opportunity then, following a 'Yes' vote, there will be strike action in the lead up to Christmas."
