Romec workers set for pay strike ballot

Around 2,000 cleaners and engineers employed by maintenance and facilities firm Romec are set to vote on possible strikes after pay talks between the CWU and the company broke down.

Bosses have offered a 1.5 per cent pay rise backdated to April, but union negotiators say this "goes nowhere near meeting the needs of our hard-working members" who have been waiting since January for their annual wage increase.

And workers are further frustrated at news that managers have received bonus payments equivalent to 15 per cent of salary.

CWU assistant secretary Ray Ellis said: "Romec have paid out these generous bonuses to managers on the grounds that the company has met all of its targets - so why not also reward our members for their contribution to this success?"

CWU Assistant Secretary Bob Gibson who represents cleaners agreed, adding: "It is now 10 months beyond the agreed settlement date and management are still refusing to put forward a realistic pay offer.

"Our members need to keep up with the cost of living and deserve to have their efforts properly rewarded. We have now reached a point where there is a real possibility that we will move to an industrial action ballot."
