Post Office pair's surprise send-off

VILLAGERS in Stathern organised a surprise send-off for a hard-working couple who served behind the post office counter for nearly a quarter of a century.

Sub-postmaster David Pryor and wife, Helena, retired yesterday having worked at the post office for 24-and-a-half years.

During that time they worked four full days and two half days a week.

To show their appreciation villagers organised a surprise presentation to the couple on Saturday, presenting them with a cheque, Champagne, cards and a bouquet of flowers.

Mrs Pryor said: “It was a total shock and we were completely overwhelmed by the generosity of the village.

“We’ve thoroughly enjoyed working here and it has been a wrench to leave but we’re both well past retirement age and now we’re looking forward to being able to take things more easy.

“It’s nice to know we’ve been appreciated and we’d like to thank everyone for their support and custom over the years.”

The post office’s closure comes after the Main Street premises was put on the market about 18 months ago but sadly with no takers.

The nearest post office is now in Harby, about one-and-a-half miles away.

Mr and Mrs Pryor will be staying in the village following their retirement.
